Bridgewater Recreation Reserve Undergoes Riparian Restoration Project
Recent activity at the Bridgewater Recreation Reserve has stirred curiosity among locals, marking the commencement of the 'Riparian restoration of Cox Creek in Bridgewater Recreation Reserve' project.
This collaborative endeavor brings together the Adelaide Hills Council, Bridgewater Friends of Cox Creek, Bush For Life, Conservation Volunteers Australia, and Aldgate Primary School.
The primary objective of the project is to safeguard and enhance the habitat and water quality of Cox Creek and its riparian zone within the reserve. Of particular importance is the preservation of the Blechnum bog, which serves as vital habitat for numerous threatened native species, including the Spotted Sun-orchid, Mount Lofty Phebalium, Yellow-footed Antechinus, and Bassian Thrush.
Invasive weed species pose a significant threat to the ecological balance of the area. The project aims to tackle the proliferation of several aggressive invaders, including Willow, Gorse, Broom, Watsonia, Periwinkle, Ivy, Pittosporum, Sallow wattle, and Blackberry.
Efforts to control willows and reintroduce native watercourse plants are expected to enhance the flow and quality of water in Cox Creek. This restoration work will not only benefit the local ecosystem but also support the survival of the Rakali population and other native and threatened species inhabiting the site.
Funding for the project has been made possible through the Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board's Grassroots Grants Program, which is supported by the landscape levy and the Adelaide Hills Council. The project has also received substantial support from dedicated volunteers who have contributed countless hours of on-ground work.
Community involvement is encouraged, and individuals interested in learning more about the project or getting involved are invited to find out more.
The riparian restoration project exemplifies a proactive approach to environmental stewardship, underscoring the commitment of local stakeholders to preserve and enhance the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Bridgewater Recreation Reserve.
