Community spirit for a day of bikeway fun and festivities

The Amy Gillett Bikeway came alive for Discover, Play, Bikeway! on Sunday 6 March.

Mayor Jan-Claire Wisdom said the strong community spirit present at Discover, Play, Bikeway! indicates a return to events that bring us together and support community wellbeing.

"Discover, Play, Bikeway! is all about sharing the secret of the Amy Gillett Bikeway and supporting local communities still recovering from bushfire and COVID-19."

With three vibrant hubs in Woodside, Charleston, and Mount Torrens, visitors were treated to the best food, entertainment (including toddler biker ballerinas from Hills Ballet school), and creators of the Adelaide Hills.

"It was especially pleasing to see the number of families with young children not only riding the bikeway, but stopping at our hubs in Mount Torrens, Charleston, and Woodside to support local stallholders, enjoy our wonderful playgrounds and facilities, and even borrowing library books and chatting to a giant roving emu!," Mayor Wisdom says.

"The quality of local Hills producers also shone through with delicious coffee, chocolate brownies, and other produce on offer."

Throughout Discover, Play, Bikeway!, we were especially impressed by the hard work of our community groups who assisted us in making sure the event ran smoothly and was an enjoyable experience for all involved. Local community groups provided hundreds of sausages to attendees (and even sold out before the day ended!). They also acted as bin monitors so people could keep our beautiful landscape clean and tidy.

"What better way to support community wellbeing than encouraging people to be outside in the beauty of the Adelaide Hills," Mayor Wisdom says.

"We are incredibly proud of this year's event and were happy to see so many community members and visitors out and about after has been a rough couple of years for the region."
