Council launches dedicated natural burial ground Martungka
Adelaide Hills Council is proud to be one of the first Council’s in South Australia to embrace meaningful end-of-life practices by launching a dedicated natural burial ground in the Adelaide Hills region.
Councillor Malcolm Herrmann, staff and guests officially opened Martungka, a natural burial ground within the Kersbrook Cemetery on Tuesday 28 May at 11:30am.
Natural burials don’t use chemicals in the process but instead biodegradable materials so that everything that’s buried can return to the earth naturally.
Local community members will now have the opportunity to honour loved ones in a way that is gentle on the earth.
Mayor Jan-Claire says this project is testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship and the deep respect we hold for the cycle of life.
The Kersbrook Cemetery is located within the Kaurna area, and as part of Council’s Reconciliation Aboriginal Place Naming Action Plan, approval was sought for the use of the Kaurna word Martungka, which means ‘In Remembrance’.
Martungka is not just a resting place; it is a sanctuary of peace, remembrance, and harmony with nature.
