Cultural collection of NZ Flax from Stirling roadside

NZ Maori cultural group Kotahitanga O Adelaide Kapa Haka have sought cultural permissions from Peremangk and Kaurna elder Uncle Ivan Copely and from the Adelaide Hills Council to collect foliage from the small areas of NZ Flax plants (Phormium tenax) growing on roadsides in the Stirling area.

The group will be using the flax to weave kākahu ōrite (costumes) for a cultural performance prior to the British & Irish Lions Rugby Tour coming to Adelaide in July 2025.

The group will be pruning flax outside the library and BWS along with council staff on April 26th.

They will be wearing their group t-shirts and hi viz so be sure to say Kia Ora and give them a wave.
