Hamilton Hill reserve named after traditional Kaurna Elder Lewis Yarlupurka O’Brien

Adelaide Hills Council is committed to Reconciliation and recognising our First Nations people.
During development of the new reserve at Hamilton Hill, Woodforde, there was an opportunity to incorporate Aboriginal place naming, which aligns with the Council's Aboriginal Place Naming Action Plan.
In consultation with Uncle Ivan Copley and Kaurna Warra Karpanthi (the Kaurna language authority) it was recommended that Council recognise Uncle Lewis O’Brien for his considerable contribution as a highly respected Kaurna Elder, and to incorporate Kaurna language in place naming throughout the reserve.
Dr Lewis Yarlupurka O’Brien, AO, is a respected Kaurna Elder, researcher and educator who is highly regarded for his work in researching and sharing Aboriginal knowledge and Kaurna language. He is an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), a Fellow of the University of South Australia and Doctor of the University (DUniv) at Flinders University. His contribution to keeping alive Kaurna language and culture and to Reconciliation is immeasurable.
Adelaide Hills Council is proud to name five places within the Yarlupurka O’Brien Reserve with traditional Kaurna names:
- Warti - Tail
- Kuula Wardli - Koala home
- Ngani - Gathering place
- Mukanthi Ila - Play space
- Mukarta - Head
The signage has been designed to incorporate Council’s Reconciliation branding which is based on the artwork of Paul Herzich.
