Clarification regarding removal of crosses at Houghton
The timber structures were removed after Council received multiple complaints related to public safety and use of public land for installation of the large cross structures.
After removal, the crosses were placed in Church property with a note asking Church representatives to contact Council to discuss the situation. This note was placed inside an expiation sleeve so it could be attached. No expiation notice was issued.
Prior to this, Council had tried numerous times to contact the church and representatives about the situation and the requirement to obtain a permit for structures to be erected on public property.
Council has since spoken with Church representatives to clarify what needs to be done in regarding installations of any structure on public land as per the relevant By-Law.
We are continuing to work with Church representatives towards a solution.
