Australian citizenship is a privilege offering enormous rewards. Citizenship ceremonies are special events conducted by Council throughout the year to officially welcome and celebrate new citizens as full members of the Australian community.
Australian citizenship is an important step in a person's migration story. Becoming an Australian citizen means that you are making an ongoing commitment to Australia and our shared values.
The ceremonies conducted by Council fulfil requirements under Australian law
Citizenship application
Citizenship application is carried out through the Australia Government's Department of Home Affairs and is available online 24 hours a day, seven days per week.
Applicants needing to contact the Department urgently should first check the Department's website, as many enquiries and applications (including those relating to expired visas) can now be resolved online.
If you are still unable to locate the information you need, please call the Global Service Centre on 131 881, who may facilitate appointments for clients with urgent or compelling needs.
The Department of Home Affairs Adelaide office provides in-person services by pre-arranged appointments only.
After paperwork has been lodged with the Department, interview and security checks are conducted. Once all immigration requirements are satisfied (usually within 3–6 months), Council will send a letter to candidates inviting them to attend a ceremony, at least three weeks prior to the ceremony.
Urgent or special ceremonies
Council is not able to conduct individual/urgent ceremonies. To request an urgent ceremony, please contact the Department of Home Affairs on 131 881, or email Ceremony.sa@homeaffairs.gov.au, and include your file reference number, full name and date of birth.
The Department provides this service on a very limited basis, for genuine compelling or compassionate reasons only.
Dress code
To reflect the importance and dignity of this occasion, we recommend smart casual wear. Traditional dress is also welcome.
