Book a hard waste collection
Residents of the Adelaide Hills Council area can book hard waste collections directly through East Waste, Council's waste contractor.
Each financial year, residents can access:
- 1 x General hard waste collection
- 1 x Mattress and/or ensemble collection.

Fees
Due to increased service demand and delivery costs, Council has implemented a user pays for this service (in place as of 1 August 2021) equivalent to 50% of the collection cost.
General hard waste collection — $51
Mattress and ensemble collection — $27 per item
Items that can be collected as hard waste
- Air conditioners (after being degassed by a licenced professional)
- Bikes and toys
- Blinds and window coverings
- Car seats (or recycle them at the RAA Child Safety Centre, 101 Richmond Road Mile End); please cut straps for safety
- Dismantled clothes lines
- Furniture
- Hot water services
- Lawn mowers
- Mattresses (must be made as a separate booking)
- Rainwater tanks
- Refrigerators and freezers (after being degassed by a licenced professional); please remove doors for safety
- Sheets of iron and guttering (up to 2m lengths)
- Small items of scrap metal
- Timber off cuts (up to 2m lengths)
- Washing machines and dryers
- Wooden pallets
Items that cannot be collected as hard waste
While you cannot dispose of the below items through hard waste, there are other options for many. Search for items on the East Waste website for tips on how and where to dispose of them.
- Ammunition, explosives or flares (contact the Police for advice 131 444)
- Batteries
- Bean bags (seal both the bag and polystyrene balls into a bag to prevent spillage and place into your blue landfill bin)
- Business or industrial waste
- Bricks, rocks, dirt, pavers, PVC pipe, concrete and other building materials
- Car tyres
- Car parts
- Co-mingled recycling (place this in your yellow lidded kerbside bin)
- Carpet, floor coverings or underlay — book a collection with Recycle360; fees apply)
- Fire extinguishers
- Food and garden organics — place this in your green lidded kerbside bin if available
- Gas bottles
- Hazardous materials (e.g. asbestos, chemicals, batteries, motor oils, paints)
- Items too heavy for two people to lift
- Materials with protruding nails and screws (please remove or bend prior to collection)
- Panels of sheet glass
- Tree and shrub prunings
Hard waste collection size
Hard waste collections must be a maximum of two cubic meters (2m wide x 1m deep x 1m high), or approximately one regular trailer load. Excess or unacceptable items will not be collected and must be removed from the kerbside by the resident.

Alternatives to hard waste collection
Many items, including household chemicals and paint, clean polystyrene, and electronic waste, can be taken to the Heathfield Resource Recovery Centre. Learn more about the HRRC here..
Alternatively, items that are still of good quality might be suitable to be sold or donated through a local charity bin or op shop, or via an online buy, swap, sell and giveaway sites including:
The Hut Community Centre's Repair Cafe
If you have items that could be salvaged through a few repairs, take it along to one of the The Hut Community Centre's Repair Cafes in Aldgate and let handy locals return your items to a usable condition.
Other repair cafes can be found through the Adelaide Sustainability Centre.
