About the reserve

The Bridgewater Recreation Reserve, tucked behind Bridgewater Oval, is a peaceful retreat where the Cox Creek flows gently through.

The scenic Heysen Trail follows the creek, offering a beautiful path through the reserve. On the reserve's western side, near Anzac Ridge Road, you'll find the Bridgewater netball courts.

Visitors can access the reserve by foot along the Heysen Trail from Bridgewater Oval or Engelbrook Reserve. For those driving, parking and entry points are available via Anzac Ridge Road, Ayr Street, and Honeysuckle Lane.

Flora and fauna

Bridgewater Recreation Reserve is home to diverse native vegetation, including threatened plant species like the spotted sun-orchid, ploughshare wattle, candlebark, pink and manna gums, Mount Lofty phebalium, short-awn wallaby-grass, and native broom.

This unique habitat supports various threatened native wildlife species, such as the shining bronze-cuckoo, white-throated treecreeper, spotted pardalote, scarlet robin, brush bronzewing, common brushtail possum, bassian thrush, and yellow-footed antechinus. Cox Creek also hosts a population of rakali, a protected native water rat.

Conservation efforts

The Bridgewater Recreation Reserve has long been cared for through Adelaide Hills Council’s annual maintenance programs and the dedicated efforts of Bush For Life volunteers.

In 2021, Council expanded these efforts with the "Riparian Restoration of Cox Creek in Bridgewater Recreation Reserve" project. This initiative, in partnership with the Bridgewater Friends of Cox Creek and Bush For Life, aims to enhance habitat and improve water quality along the creek, riparian zones, and Blechnum bogs through targeted weed control and replanting with native species.

In 2024, selective willow removal was also undertaken, supported by a Grassroots Grant from the Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board. This grant, funded through the landscape levy and Adelaide Hills Council, supports ongoing restoration efforts in the area.
